What are Chiropractic Adjustments?
The most common chiropractic procedure performed is known as spinal manipulation, also known as an adjustment. In short, it is the manipulation of vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns, or fail to function properly, as a result of injury or possibly poor posture habits. The purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is to manually apply controlled force into joints that have become restricted in movement.
A chiropractic adjustment begins with a high-velocity, short-lever arm thrust applied to the vertebra. This action will be accompanied by an audible release of gas (oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide), which alleviates joint pressure. While chiropractic adjustments rarely cause side effects, some recipients may experience an aching or mild soreness following treatment, which generally resolves itself in 24 to 48 hours.
Who Benefits from Chiropractic Adjustments?
The beauty of chiropractic adjustments is that they can be applied to a multitude of issues or conditions. While the list of those who may benefit from this treatment is vast, here are a few situations where chiropractic manipulation is best utilized:
- Sports Injuries
- Back Pain
- Neck Pain
- Arthritis/Joint Stiffness or Pain
- Chronic Injures
Questions Concerning Chiropractic Adjustments
Is it safe?
Chiropractic has an excellent safety record, but no healthcare treatment is completely free of potential side effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are small, according to the American Chiropractic Association. Most patients experience immediate relief after an adjustment, but some may feel mild soreness, stiffness or aching, the type often experienced after exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness after spinal manipulation typically eases within a day.
How often should I go?
Due to the hands-on nature of chiropractic treatment, more than one visit is generally required, as it is a gradual process, depending on the condition being addressed and what action needs to be taken. The Doctors of Chiropractic at Montvale Health & Wellness will create a personal treatment plan for you and inform you as to how long you should expect it to continue.
Will my insurance cover me?
Yes. Chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans, including major medical plans, workers’ compensation, NJ & NY automobile policies and Medicare. For a comprehensive list of coverage, contact us for more information.
Would my child benefit from chiropractic care?
Yes. Much like adults, children are active individuals that may suffer from similar types of injures due to overexertion, such as sports, or injury as a result of an accident.Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.
